Research Reveals More Than Four-Fifths of Natural Medicine Books on Amazon Likely Authored by Artificial Intelligence

A recent study has revealed that automatically produced material has infiltrated the natural remedies publication section on Amazon, with items promoting memory-enhancing gingko extracts, fennel "tummy-soothing syrups", and citrus-based wellness chews.

Disturbing Findings from Content Analysis Research

According to examining over five hundred books released in the platform's alternative therapies section from January and September of 2024, analysts concluded that the vast majority seemed to be written by artificial intelligence.

"This is a troubling disclosure of the widespread presence of unmarked, unchecked, unregulated, likely AI content that has completely invaded the platform," commented the study's lead researcher.

Professional Apprehensions About AI-Generated Medical Information

"There's a huge amount of herbal research out there right now that's absolutely rubbish," said a professional herbal practitioner. "Automated systems cannot discern how to sift through all the dross, all the rubbish, that's of absolutely no consequence. It could lead people astray."

Example: Popular Book Facing Scrutiny

An example of the apparently AI-generated books, Natural Healing Handbook, currently maintains the top-selling position in Amazon's skincare, aroma therapies and herbal remedies categories. Its introduction promotes the publication as "a guide for individual assurance", encouraging readers to "look inward" for remedies.

Doubtful Creator Background

The creator is identified as an unverified writer, whose platform profile presents this individual as a "thirty-five year old natural medicine practitioner from the beachside location of a popular Australian destination" and establishment figure of the company a natural remedies business. However, neither this individual, the brand, or associated entities appear to have any online presence apart from the marketplace profile for the title.

Detecting Automatically Created Text

Investigation noted multiple indicators that suggest possible AI-generated herbalism material, comprising:

  • Extensive use of the leaf emoji
  • Nature-themed writer identities including Flower names, Fern, and Spice names
  • References to questionable natural practitioners who have endorsed unsupported treatments for significant diseases

Broader Trend of Unconfirmed Automated Material

These publications represent an expanding phenomenon of unchecked automated text available for purchase on the marketplace. Last year, foraging enthusiasts were warned to avoid foraging books sold on the marketplace, ostensibly created by automated programs and containing doubtful guidance on how to discern lethal fungi from safe ones.

Requests for Regulation and Labeling

Publishing representatives have called for the platform to commence marking AI-generated content. "Each title that is completely AI-created must be identified as AI-generated and AI slop needs to be taken down as a matter of urgency."

In response, the platform commented: "We maintain content guidelines regulating which titles can be made available for purchase, and we have preventive and responsive processes that help us detect content that contravenes our requirements, whether automatically produced or not. We commit significant effort and assets to guarantee our standards are adhered to, and take down titles that fail to comply to those guidelines."
