From The Last of Us Co-Director Comes a New Game That Looks Very Different Yet Expands Upon Familiar Concepts.
Bruce Straley behind The Last of Us is crafting a new venture to video games. The upcoming game, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, represents the inaugural effort of his studio, Wildflower Interactive, a project that will build on the legacy he helped create centered around reactive companion characters.
Introducing a Novel Adventure Game Concept
Shown for the first time at a major gaming event, Coven of the Chicken Foot is described as a character-puzzle-platformer. The game follows a seasoned spellcaster, a character who subverts traditional video game heroics. The foundational premise originated in a desire to deconstruct the typical hero’s journey.
"Consider a scenario where you didn’t have combat prowess? What if your character was somehow encumbered? What if you’re a little old lady?" posed the director. "I thought it was incredibly compelling to think about the essence of heroism. Being a hero means persevering against challenges, but also encompasses sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence."
Evolving Past Companions: A New Level of AI Interaction
Even though the title seems unfamiliar at first glance, its core innovation builds directly upon of the work developed for The Last of Us. This whole endeavor flowed from one pivotal question: "What if I could make Ellie even more reactive and adaptive in response to the user?"
The mysterious beast in the game transcends typical AI behavior. Straley describes it as a toddler that reacts through a multi-phase process. First, it exhibits curiosity, resulting in playful hijinks. Subsequently, it moves into a mimicry phase. Finally, it watches and learns to learn how things work.
- To illustrate: When the partner witnesses an object being placed, it grasps the physical act but not the reason.
- Subsequently, it may start picking up various things and test fitting them, repeating what it saw.
- The 'why' is learned when it stumbles upon solving a puzzle itself, creating a genuine learning moment.
Crafting Your Own Unique Story
Such advanced AI seeks to generate a deeply personal experience. Straley stresses that this project will be a contemplative journey of exploration rather than a linear, combat-centric story.
"Whenever I attempted rigid narrative turns within this framework, the dynamic felt wrong," Straley explained. "The core appeal between these characters is that every person who plays will inevitably create unique moments and stories unlike anyone else's."
This commitment to emergent, character-driven storytelling, Coven of the Chicken Foot represents both a continuation and a bold new direction from the creator's iconic past work. The project is presently in development for computer systems.
