The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Follows Poor Feedback
Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a more defined game identity.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a revised approach, aiming to address gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Hires
This announcement echoes a comparable step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.
Below is the complete message from the president's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative creators we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the requirement for a sharper identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the feedback to heart and revamped the title with a renewed direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our players.
The belief in this project strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the latest Studio Head of the team. After some time of conversations, Ben officially joins us on next week.
His leadership and background in the competitive gaming field is vast, having devoted the last 15 years producing and leading some of the most recognizable series in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in greeting him next week. We are all looking forward to keep witnessing the development of the game in the months to ahead.
The President
Background of the Incoming Head
Brinkman presently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Details and Vision
Project Ethos was announced in last year together with a public demo. Then, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary states. "Challenge the competition with new abilities, challenges, and tests that shift every round. Will you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, risk it all, and trust your team can secure victory? The decision is yours."
Project Ethos does not have an announced release date or platforms, but players can look forward to additional details as creation advances.
